The undisputed winners at Wimbledon this year were of course the players battling it out on the manicured lawns of SW19, not least because they survived some gruelling matches in this summer’s unprecedented heat. Even so, there were some other winners to be spotted treading the hallowed ground of Henman Hill. Many male attendees caught The Jackal’s attention because they scrubbed up so well – even in the summer sun.
This was undoubtedly helped by Ralph Lauren’s long association with the Club’s rules of dress. Mr Lauren’s flair for cutting a mean double-breasted suit and cream flannels, worn in true Gatsby style (Lauren provided Robert Redford’s outfits in the original 1973 film adaptation) was proven multiple times last week, as seen on the likes of Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland and Luke Evans.
Last week’s spectators, sporting a steady stream of cream linen, pinstriped tailoring and princely checked jackets (the latter was characteristically nailed by Prince William with his pale blue checked jacket and navy trouser combo) led us to believe this is the one summer event that is becoming as competitive in the style stakes as any red carpet catwalk. While the summer season maybe coming to an end, the warm weather of this seemingly endless hot spell is not, so we’ve pulled together our five favourite pieces from Ralph Lauren’s new season collection that will have you ready well in time for Wimbledon 2019, and see your summer out in style, to boot. Never let it be said we don’t give you plenty of notice.
1. ‘Morgan’ textured sports coat
The most impressive looks worn last week at Wimbledon were all anchored by a well-cut blazer and this ‘Morgan’ fitted jacket offers a modern update on the preppy classic. It has a soft natural shape, so is ideal tow ear in warmer weather with its half-canvassed construction. This blue version is lent some subtle texture thanks to its wool and linen fabric, which has been developed exclusively for Polo Ralph Lauren. Pop the collar up and it will reveal a Black Watch tartan under-collar, which adds a nice touch of detail. In short, it’s a sleek, versatile jacket worth of Wimbledon (and many other occasions for that matter) that can be layered up come the cooler months with a cashmere cable knit and navy wool coat.

2. Cotton poplin shirt
This shade of cornflower blue is perfect for summer, and makes for an easy to wear Polo Ralph Lauren shirt in cool cotton poplin. The shirt is cut on a slim block, but has a central box pleat at the back (a classic touch) to ensure you can move freely. The button-down collar, synonymous with many of the brand’s shirts, signifies a casual look, but team this with a club striped tie, or plain silk in navy, bottle green or burgundy, and it’ll look suitably dressed-up. Then, wear with a navy or cream linen blazer and contrasting tailored trousers for maximum preppy appeal. Note also, this colour will look equally smart with the rich autumnal tones coming in next season’s knitwear and tailoring, which is starting to drop into store and online now.

3. ‘Sullivan’ slim stretch jeans
If you can’t get away with wearing a pair of white jeans at Wimbledon – or for any other summer event for that matter – then when can you? These flattering slim fit jeans come with a small amount of added stretch, making them a comfortable choice when sitting for hours watching high-octane Centre Court action. The white jean is not just a summer seasonal fade either, these will look great teamed with a camel coat and chocolate suede Chelsea boots this autumn, along with other pieces that work with next season’s tonal brown trend (it’s coming – mark our words), lifting an otherwise drab winter colour palette. Wear yours with a blue single or double-breasted blazer, striped T-shirt or Bengal stripe shirt, plus a knitted silk tie and a pair of simple suede loafers.

4. Checked linen tie
This tartan check offers a nice alternative to the usual stripe club ties seen commonly at Wimbledon, and works well with blue chambray or poplin shirts as well as classic shirts in crisp white Sea Island cotton. It also touches on one of this coming autumn’s most prominent trends, the return of big checks – lots of them. Big and small, from subtle to bold, and all mixed together at the same time. It seems that come the autumn, it’ll be impossible to have enough checks in one outfit. So, get ahead of the curve and work some through your wardrobe now, before the trend really takes hold. This tie is made from fine Italian linen, so is the perfect weight for summer, but the Black Watch check plays to the new season trend without being too try-hard.

5. ‘Ardenall’ monk strap shoes
The shoe of choice for many of the stylish attendees at this year’s Wimbledon, the double monk strap works well when team with traditional suits, as well as separates, including our aforementioned white jean and blazer combo. This comes in Polo’s signature Italian calfskin, making it both light, ultra-soft, and finished with a distinctive almond shaped burnished toecap. Moreover, it’s a classic style that can be worn all year long, thanks to its lightweight construction and buckled design. Team with sharp navy tailoring, tweedy checks or classic pinstripes – all big trends for the coming autumn season.
