Omega’s continuing to innovate in the watch market, with a new limited edition Speedmaster, available to buy through Instagram

News for watch fiends. Omega, the Swiss watch-making powerhouse par-excellence, has unveiled a new and rather delectable edition of its iconic Speedmaster.

This latest ‘#SpeedyTuesday’ watch is Omega’s Limited Edition 42 mm ‘Ultraman’, a Speedmaster shaped tribute to the key character in the Ultraman programme, a Japanese sci-fi television series, and one of the most famous examples of the Kaiju ‘strange beast’ fantasy genre.

Omega’s relationship with the Ultraman series is closer than you might think. The Speedmaster became the chosen watch of the series’ heroes, the Monster Attack Team, when the orange hands of the original Omega Moonwatch caught the Producer’s eye during filming in 1971.

It’s a curious starting point for the watch’s design, but Omega’s created a handsome thing nonetheless, filled with references to the watches worn in the original TV series. The most obvious touches are the hot burnt orange hour markers and hands, and the black and orange bezel in anodized aluminium – which match the orange colour used in the original Ultraman Moonwatch.

Other witty details include the minute subdial, which features the first three minutes picked out in orange – a reference to Ultraman’s ‘superhero mode’, which was only ever switched on for three minutes at a time. Plus, on the seconds subdial at 9 o’clock, there’s a hidden silhouette of Ultraman himself, and the watch’s dedicated strap changer – identical in shape to Ultraman’s ‘Beta Capsule’ – features a UV lamp at one end, which when shined on the dial reveals the image. The watch also comes on a unique black and orange nato strap, with a spare black leather strap in tow.

It’s limited to just 2,012 pieces, and Omega’s offering prospective buyers the opportunity to reserve theirs through its Instagram bio link. So, if this has caught your eye, don’t hang about – Omega’s special edition ‘Speedy Tuesdays’ seldom stand still for long.
