Fifty-year-old whisky… for free?

This November, Craigellachie has a treat for whisky lovers

Sometimes an event comes along that seems too good to be true. But hold onto your hats – this one is the real deal.

This November, Scottish distillery Craigellachie are hosting an exclusive three-day pop-up ‘bar within a bar’ at Milroy’s of Soho, London, from 26-28 November. And when we say exclusive we mean exclusive – Bar 51 will have just six seats, available in 45-minute segments across three evenings. Reservations are available through a lottery system on the Craigellachie website.

But it gets even better than that. Following their philosophy that whisky is made for drinking and enjoying, and not sitting on a shelf gathering dust, Craigellachie will be offering the whole experience for free, including the chance to taste its 51-year old Scotch whisky, 51 bottles of which were laid down in 1967 in their Moray distillery. Also available for trying – still on the house – are ‘Craigellachie 13’ and ‘Craigellachie 23’, all at no cost to you.

Guests will be guided through the special tasting by the distillery’s Global Brand Ambassador, Georgie Bell. Fittingly, Milroy’s of Soho is also London’s oldest whisky shop, making it the ideal place to experience this aged whisky. After the tasting, you’ll be taken downstairs to The Vaults, a hidden cocktail bar, for a ‘Craigellachie 13’ cocktail.

Known as ‘the bad boy of Speyside’, Craigellachie has always rebelled against modern day whisky norms. Located in Aberlour, Banffshire, near the village of the same name, the distillery has only released a handful of its official bottlings since it opened in 1891. While 50-year-old bottles of whisky usually retail for anywhere between £1,500 and £38,000, Craigellachie has decided its ‘51’ Scotch is too good not to share. Bar 51 in Soho will be the distillery’s first stop on a worldwide tour, before it travels on to Australia, South Africa and the United States, to give those guys a chance to taste the vintage, too.

So what are you waiting for? An opportunity like this doesn’t come around too often, especially one that promises the chance to taste such a unique Scotch. Gather your fellow whisky buffs, and enter the ballot today.
