The best rums from around the world to try

Is your order a Nicaraguan or a Guatemalan rum?

Although you might still harbour fond memories of your university days’ order of Captain Morgan and coke, there’s a lot more to rum than just (later regretted) late night libations. We’ve rounded up the best rums from distilleries around the world, ideal for sipping at your leisure. And, if you need a mixer, try adding tonic instead of coke – R&T is meant to be the next G&T.

Ron Zacapa Centenario Sistema Solera 23

This multi award-winning rum is matured in a mix of bourbon and sherry casks for between 6 and 23 years. The resulting drink is sweet and nutty, with a hint of smoke to finish.

Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva

Distilled in a copper pot before being aged in small oak casks for up to 12 years, this dark gold sipping rum is a sure-fire winner for rum newcomers and aficionados alike. It’s sweet and fudgey, and definitely needs no mixer.

Flor De Cana 12 Year Old Centenario Rum

With autumnal aromas of red fruit, honey and toasted nut, alongside oak, vanilla and baked apples, this rum is perfect for sipping on shortening evenings. What’s more, Flor De Cana is Fair Trade certified and makes all its rums using sustainably sourced ingredients and renewable energy.

Mount Gay XO

Owners of the oldest rum distillery in the world, Mount Gay had to make it on this list. Its XO blend is matured for at least eight years to create fruity aromas of ripe bananas and warm spices. Kept in charred ex-Tennessee whisky and bourbon barrels, this gives it a rich, oaky and sharp taste with a smooth finish.

Appleton Estate 12 Year Old Rare Blend

This bottling is a blend of column and pot-distilled rums aged between 12 and 18 years, and aged in ex-bourbon barrels. The result is a complex, medium-bodied rum that tastes of spicy oak, ginger and coffee, with a fruity finish.
